Differences between what’s app and signal chatting apps

What are the main differences between WhatsApp and signal app. What would be the reasons to choose one of them on the other?

We all know about WhatsApp, it was developed in 2009 and sold to Facebook. After Facebook has released its new privacy policy people on internet are talking much about the app “signal”.

About Signal app:

Signal was developed by people who worked for WhatsApp. It is owned by a nonprofit organization. Hence they don’t depend on ads, tracking their user’s data etc. The developers of this app get paid by our donations. Inside the app you will find the option for donations where you can support them by one time donation or by becoming monthly a supporter.

Comparison between WhatsApp and Signal App:

1- Privacy:

Signal :

Signal is an open source app, it runs through donations not by ads, it doesn’t store your meta data. Hence it is more trust worthy in terms of privacy.

WhatsApp: WhatsApp is owned by Facebook. Since it depends on ad, it records your Data to serve you targeting ads and Also can provide data to third party alliance.

2- Compatibility :

Signal:

Signal is an open source app, it runs through donations not by ads, it doesn’t store your meta data. Hence it is more trust worthy in terms of privacy.

WhatsApp:

WhatsApp is also available for all mobile devices with different os. Unlike signal you have web app where You can use WhatsApp without downloading desktop application.

3- Multi Device:

You can run signal on more than one device simultaneously. You can secure your account with PIN.

WhatsApp:

If you want to use WhatsApp on another mobile with same number you will be asked for OTP verification every time.

4- Multimedia:

Signal:

You can share photos, videos, audio, contacts, location. It has inbuilt GIF images collection from GIPHY. You can take photos and edit them before sending. It has face blurring option.

WhatsApp:

WhatsApp has all features except in build GIF collection and blurring feature.

5- Chat:

Signal:

  • Swipe and reply
  • deleting chat after sending
  • different notification sound can be set for specific contact
  • You can set specific time for the chat to be deleted automatically.
  • You can react on a chat with different emojis like we do in Facebook post reaction.

WhatsApp:

All features except last two.

6- Sending Files To yourself:

Signal:

You can send text, files to yourself with text to me option.

WhatsApp:

This is one of the downsides of  WhatsApp that you cannot send anything to yourself like Gmail, telegram etc.

7- Contacts:

Signal:

Signal will have all contacts and you can create contacts that are only stored in signal’s server and cannot be tracked by other apps or your OS.

WhatsApp:

Only works with contacts that are saved in your mobile phone

Summary

Which app should I use WhatsApp or Signal?

There is no necessary and important feature in WhatsApp which is not available on Signal, rather there are many features lacking in WhatsApp and are available in Signal.

If you are the one who cares about his privacy than Signal is go to option. WhatsApp crawls your chats, images, links, status etc. and shares data with Facebook even if you don’t have a Facebook account. Signal does not store this meta data on its server at all, hence it is a perfect app in terms of privacy.
